Homer ist bereits das, was man seit Kallimachos
(ca. 300 – 245 v. Chr.) einen poeta doctus nennt: ein Dichter, der mit Gelehrsamkeit brilliert (so vor ihm schon der assyrische Autor des „Achten Feldzugs“ Sargons).
Das Epos wird zur Enzyklopädie des Wissens der Zeit. Homer bringt – ganz so wie später Vergil – eine Fülle von Anspielungen auf die zeitgenössische Geschichte (siehe Schrott) und auf die Werke des noch wesentlich assyrisch geprägten literarischen Kanons in sein Epos ein.
Homer bringt Zitate von entlegenem Bildungsgut (hapax legomena usw.), das nicht unbedingt alt, aber vor allem fremd und unbekannt sein muss. Die gebildeten Freunde Homers konnten auch die Struktur und die Querverweise im Epos verstehen und den Dichter zu immer neuen poetischen Höchstleistungen anstacheln.
Die sorgfältige assyrische Ausbildung einerseits und die Befreiung vom Korsett erlernter literarischer Konventionen durch den Abzug der Kolonialmacht andererseits ermöglichten es Homer, das neue griechische Epos auf eine bewährte literarische Tradition zu gründen.
Gleichzeitig konnte Homer der Überlieferung und den kulturellen Erfordernissen der neuen griechisch-kilikischen Stadtstaaten Rechnung zu tragen.
