Seit Aratos im dritten Jahrhundert vor Christus in einem neuen astronomischen Lehrgedicht eine modernere Sternenkarte schuf, wurde Homer vor allem als Dichter zweier Heldenepen verstanden, aber noch Lukian im zweiten Jahrhundert n. Chr. wusste, dass das Liebesabenteuer von Aphrodite und Ares (Odyssee 8, 266 – 366) sich auf die Konjunktion der Planeten Venus und Mars am Sternenhimmel bezog (Lukian, Astrologie 22).
Hertha von Dechend hat 1969 in einem bahnbrechenden Werk die astromischen Grundlagen vieler europäischer und asiatischer Sagenstoffe beschrieben (Giorgio de Santillana, Hertha von Dechend: Hamlet’ Mill, deutsch: Die Mühle des Hamlet, 1992).
1999 haben Florence und Kenneth Wood in “Homer’s Secret Iliad” (Homers geheime Ilias) die Beziehungen zwischen dem irdischen Krieg der Griechen gegen Troja und den Bewegungen der Sterne und Sternbilder am Nachthimmel glänzend analysiert.
Wenn wir – wie zurzeit – die Venus am Himmel leuchten sehen, können wir uns mit Homer daran erinnern, dass sie es war, die durch ihren Sieg bei der ersten Wahl einer Miss Universum den trojanischen Krieg auslöste.
