Jerusalem gleicht dabei anderen altorientalischen Städten in Syrien mit ähnlicher Wirtschaftsstruktur wie z. B. Palmyra, die M. Rostovtzeff in dem Buch Caravan Cities (Oxford 1932) beschrieben hat.
